Message from the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Welcome back, Thorobred family.

The 2022-2023 academic year begins a new era in the life of Kentucky State University. As we again welcome our new acting president and prepare for another exciting year, our goal is to build on the legacy of student success exemplified by the achievements of the scores of students who have entered our doors and left to make their mark in the world.

The long road from State Normal School for Colored Persons to Kentucky State University covered nearly a century. Advancing from a fledging school in 1886 to a recognized university was a gargantuan undertaking. We praise the men and women who traveled that road and faced the internal and external challenges of their time. They did not shrink from those challenges. It was their ardent desire to advance, support, and stay true to the mission of offering students excellent preparation for life and careers. Our forebears succeeded in passing on to new generations first a college and then a university with vast promise and limitless potential.

We are the heirs of their vision, tenacity, and hard work. It is our time to address the present-day challenges of fiscal responsibility and student progress. As heirs, we must develop our students as scholars who understand that higher education is not only a privilege but also a serious commitment--a commitment that requires dedication and serious effort to complete their academic programs within four years. As administrators, faculty, and staff, we must be invested in ensuring that our students are properly advised and are given the resources, the facilities, and the support they will need to complete their programs with all deliberate speed.

In doing so, we continue on the paths that started in 1886. Let us not veer from the road that has been paved with sweat and tears, hopes and dreams, strivings toward excellence, and challenges overcome.

Let us not fail in our charge of enabling our intended future. I look forward to our working together—building on the past, innovating, improving, and always moving onward and upward for the success of our students and our University. Have a great year!

With best wishes,

Dr. Leroy Hamilton, Jr.
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
