Kentucky State University alumna made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera

A Kentucky State University alumna recently made her surprise debut at the Metropolitan Opera.

Michelle Bradley, class of 2007, was recently profiled in the Lexington Herald-Leader about her debut as Liù in “Turandot.” Bradley was scheduled to make her debut Oct. 29, but received a call to perform Oct. 21 after another performer could not go on.

Bradley told the Herald-Leader the late Kentucky State professor Andrew Smith helped guide her to opera.

“He helped me find my place,” Bradley told the Herald-Leader of Smith. “I knew that my voice would not fit in the pop culture world or a hip hop world or even a gospel world. I just did not have that sound. And he helped me find my place. I’m not at all surprised that KSU would bring about a singer that’s at the Met because it should be more coming out. I mean, there’s so many I graduated with, so many wonderful students.”
