One Kentucky State University alumnus is in his 11th year in higher education. Wise words from his grandmother has helped shape his life.

Kevin Reese, class of 2007, works at The University of Nebraska – Lincoln in diversity inclusion.

“Growing up, my grandmother would always say that we are helpers to one another, so I took that thought and ran with it,” Reese said.

Reese said his office focuses on helping underrepresented, first-generation and low-income students succeed on campus.

“As educators, we are in the business of taking students from where they are to where they need to be,” Reese said.

Reese said a number of amazing mentors at Kentucky State influenced him, as well.

“I had amazing mentors at Kentucky State in Reginald Davis, Leslie Thomas, Dr. Rubye Jones, Isadore Rich, Vatriesha Nyemba, Dillon Beckford, Nicole Daniels, Ron Banks and Dr. Vernell Bennett,” Reese said. “They poured unselfishly into me and I wanted to be able to give the same to other students.”

Reese said some of his best memories at Kentucky State include serving as a resident assistant in Young Hall, serving as first attendant to Mr. KSU, serving as senior class president, participating in Gospel Ensemble, the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge team and as a student ambassador.

“Attending Kentucky State gifted me several memories and lifelong friendships,” Reese said.

Reese encouraged current and future Thorobreds to surround themselves with people who will help them grow.

“Take every opportunity offered to expand your network,” Reese said.
