Veterans were honored and recognized during the Kentucky State University Anna Mac Clarke Veterans Recognition Assembly recently.

Shane Hooper served as the keynote speaker. Hooper, former first lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, encouraged audience members to build a legacy.

“Build on history by forging ahead on boldness,” Hooper said. “Frame the walls with progressive and productive living. Cover the legacy with a roof of successful endeavors.”

Dr. Lucian Yates III, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs, gave the summons to assembly.

“We live in the greatest nation on the face of the Earth,” Yates said. “Because of you, we are free.”

Robert L. Smith, a cadet in the Army ROTC, gave an inspirational reading.

“These men and women exhausted their time, energy and freedoms to uphold our freedoms,” Smith said.

Dr. John C. Gregory, director of veterans and military student affairs, provided a recognition of armed services.

“Take a moment this morning to walk humbly with me,” Gregory said. “Let’s honor the superheroes, the icons, those who walk humbly in combat boots towards danger. It’s become custom since 9/11 to thank service members returning from battle. Let us not forget those who served prior to that.”

Kentucky State University President M. Christopher Brown II presented awards to Tommy Haynes for his longtime service in the Army and to Col. William M. Landrum III, secretary of the Finance and Administration Cabinet, for his 36 years of military and corporate service.

President Brown also presented a token of appreciation to Kentucky State University employees who served, as well as a luncheon for veterans in attendance.
