A Kentucky State University professor and scientists at Nanjing University Veterinary School recently had collaborative research published in the field’s most prestigious peer-reviewed journal.

Dr. Alexander C.K. Lai, assistant professor of biology, was the lead corresponding author of a peer-reviewed publication in Veterinary Research.

Lai said the journal is the most prestigious in its field.

“Using full genome sequencing and high-power computation, we reconstructed the evolutionary origin of canine influenza virus H3N8,” Lai said. “A significant finding is that influenza virus is more contagious than previously thought, but there are many barriers for new influenza to emerge.”

The title of the work is “Host-range shift of H3N8 canine influenza virus: a phylodynamic analysis of its origin and adaptation from equine to canine host.”
