For the first time in recent history, Kentucky State University is providing a student food pantry for students in need.

A food drive will kick-off the new service provided by the University. Pack the Student Pantry, sponsored by the Circle K International Club, takes place April 8 – 15. Items requested include socks, individually wrapped snacks, soups, ramen noodles, hygiene products, laundry detergent and $10 gift cards.

“We are also trying to collect $10 Kroger gift cards in case commuting and independent students have emergency gas or food needs,” Irma Johnson, with the Office of Regional Stewardship and Public Engagement, said.

The student organization with the most donations will win a pizza party. Students can earn one hour of community service for every $5 in pantry goods donated.

According to Johnson, the student pantry will be located in the student life area of the Carl M. Hill Student Center. Students in need would go to student life to make requests and the staff will assist them.

University divisions or departments are encouraged to participate and may make donations in the name of any student organization to support their efforts.
