Kentucky State Mourns Beloved Educator, Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite Band Director Samuel L. Griffin

Kentucky State University President M. Christopher Brown II joined hundreds as word spread of the death of esteemed educator and founder of Alcorn State University’s Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite, Samuel L. Griffin, to remember his incredible legacy. 

During his tenure as president at Alcorn, Brown, in recognition of Griffin’s years of service, organized a farewell tour of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and had the privilege of naming him Director Emeritus.

“Because of his love for his students’ well-being, many earned college degrees,” Brown applauded Griffin’s commitment to ensuring his students remained in the classroom, instilling in them a sense of pride and dedication to their academic journey. “Griffin produced numerous music educators, band directors and other successful professionals all while mesmerizing and captivating audiences. He was an innovator and garnered a national reputation for the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite Marching Band. The band’s world-renowned showmanship made Alcorn State a household name.”

Kentucky State University extends its heartfelt sympathy to the Griffin family and the thousands of students, colleagues and friends, who will forever cherish his love and continue his legacy of leadership and excellence.
