Professors in the Kentucky State University’s Division of Aquaculture traveled to Edinburgh, Scotland, in September to represent the University at the Aquaculture Europe 2016 Conference.

Dr. Robert Durborow, professor in the College of Agriculture, Food Science, and Sustainable Systems’ Division of Aquaculture, and Dr. Andrew Ray, assistant professor in the Division of Aquaculture, helped to showcase the world-class research and extension work being conducted by KSU’s Land Grant Program. The Division of Aquaculture is the University’s Program of Distinction.

The theme of the conference was “Food for Thought: Something to think about, something to be seriously considered, and something that provides mental stimulation and nourishment.”

Dr. Durborow presented a poster dedicated to the late Dr. Glenn Hoffman, author of the well-known book, “Parasites of North American Freshwater Fishes.” His co-author on the poster was Christopher Lyvers, an undergraduate student in the College of Agriculture, Food Science, and Sustainable Systems’ Agriculture, Food, and Environment degree program. Lyvers digitally scanned Dr. Hoffman’s slide collection that he used in his book, which was willed to Dr. Durborow by the author.

Dr. Ray gave an oral presentation titled, “Aquaculture Technologies for Indoor Marine Shrimp Farming,” which gave an overview of his work at KSU on marine shrimp aquaculture. Dr. Ray guided the audience through nursery and grow-out level shrimp production as well as water remediation technologies for the sustained use of marine water at inland locations. The presentation was given to an audience that filled the large presentation room, and he received more questions than could be addressed in the allotted time.
