Student Run Farm Food Safety
Safety is always our #1 priority on our student run farm. All of our urban ag farm techs and student personell are produce safety trained by the Produce Safety Alliance and State Food Safety. We ensure all of our products are treated with the upmost care and cleaniness by training all of our students and staff at the Kentucky State Univeristy Student Run Farm. We ensure to keep records of all produce safety material and standard operating procedure for the farm.
"The Produce Safety Alliance (PSA) is a collaboration between Cornell University, FDA, and USDA to prepare fresh produce growers to meet the regulatory requirements included in the United States Food and Drug Administration’s Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule."

In additon to the Produce Safety certificate, the Urban AG/ CEA students that work on the farm obtain a food handlers permit from State Food Safety to provide extra training and knowledge about food safety practices. Some of our produce safety officers are Food Safety Manager certifed and oversee food handling procedures at the KYSU student run farm.

We also ensure our lead farm techs are pesticide safety trained through the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. They have gone through an intensive private pesticide application training through the Kentucky Extension service. We ensure only trained personell apply pesticides as needed.
