Alumna art exhibit to celebrate progress of African Americans and Women
The artwork and photography of Dishayna Perkins ’22 will be on display on the entire second and third-floor galleries of the Lexington Public Library (Central Library) Feb. 1 – Mar. 31. The art exhibit titled, “My Peoples” will celebrate African and African American culture.
The mass communications & journalism graduate is the CEO, host and editor-in-chief of Kentucky Good Vibes, a Lexington-based multimedia company that publishes a magazine, podcast, television show as well as provides photography and public relations.
About the exhibit, Perkins says that, “People can expect to see unique, cultural exhibits that symbolize my people.” It will showcase, “kings and queens and people dressed in royal African attire, not the images we grew up seeing in the textbooks.”
The two-month exhibit allows Perkins to showcase art that celebrates both Black History and Women’s History months, consecutively.
The women’s history celebration will begin in February with the first annual “Queen Me” Women’s Conference Feb. 11 at the library. The Women’s Conference will feature guest speakers and live performances and the opportunity to network with other businesswomen.
“My reward is being able to do what God put me here to do,” Perkins said. “I like bringing people together and making a difference. That’s my purpose in life.”
