Associate Professor of chemistry Dr. Scott Wicker recently completed a year-long development fellowship with the Center for the Advancement of STEM Leadership (CASL). Dr. Wicker, a Cultivating and Retaining Excellence in STEM (CaRES) team member, presented findings from a year-long Group Action Learning Project (GALP) during the final residency on June 7.

“During our leadership residencies, we had to defend our group’s action learning project evaluation mechanism, report on impactful outcomes, and indicate how we leveraged our collective and individual effective leadership frames to influence broadening STEM participation across our campuses,” said Dr. Wicker.

The purpose of the CASL-CaRES GALP is to create and build a five-campus partnership to increase knowledge about open educational and openly accessible resources. GALP also develops opportunities to promote using STEM-specific open access resources, journals, and materials to enhance teaching, learning, and scholarship for students and faculty on each campus.

CASL fellows were presented with plaques and swag, invited to participate in the CASL fellow alumni network, and challenged to publish findings and write collaborative sub-award proposals to broaden STEM participation after the program.

Kentucky State University is an affiliate institution member of the Center for the Advancement of STEM Leadership. As an institutional benefit, Kentucky State can submit up to two applications per year for faculty or staff consideration to the STEM leadership development program.

The CASL project is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U).
