Kentucky native choosing to “be great” in the Commonwealth after graduating
Kentucky is home to Jacob Lilly and the Kentucky State University graduate plans to invest his talents back into the Commonwealth after he walks across the stage on May 13.
The Owenton native chose Kentucky State so that he could remain closer to home while pursuing his dreams of one day working in the field of history.
A history enthusiast from a young age, Jacob always knew that his future would be focused on the past.
“When I was younger, I can remember begging my parents to take me to the museum to see new exhibits or to go on a day trip to visit historic sites throughout Kentucky. I believe that looking at the past can give us a better perspective of the times we are living in and what we can do to ensure a better future,” he expressed.
Jacob has been afforded many opportunities around his passion during his tenure on the Hill including volunteering with the Kentucky Historical Society and the Owen County Historical Society. He is currently employed at the Liberty Hall Historic Site in Frankfort.
“My experience with these museums has provided me with a great foundation in the operations of museums and an understanding of the visitor experience they provide,” he shared. “I have gotten to see the behind-the-scenes work of creating exhibits and educating others about Kentucky’s past and beyond.”
A first-generation student, Jacob says he simply wanted to make his family proud by being the first in his immediate family to graduate from college.
“I wanted to create a successful future for myself and that is what this degree will allow me to do.” He counts it a “tremendous honor” to receive his bachelor’s degree and a reminder that, “hard work truly does pay off.”
Jacob says that he would encourage others to attend Kentucky State because of the countless opportunities offered to be able to go back and make an impact in their community.
“I have had the chance to meet some amazing faculty and staff. KSU was close to home but I didn’t have to sacrifice opportunities to network and enjoy the great education that this institution provides.”
