A Kentucky State University alumnus rose from the ranks of intern to acting assistant division administrator with the Federal Highway Administration after earning his business degree.

Steven Jacobs, a 2007 graduate, said he knew majoring in business would open the door to many opportunities and would help him navigate his career.

“Professionally I started out as a student intern with the Federal Highway Administration,” Jacobs said. “Upon graduation, I transitioned to our professional development program (PDP), where I travel across the county doing developmental assignments.”

After serving in the PDP, Jacobs served as the senior financial specialist in the Ohio division office. Soon after that, Jacobs was promoted to finance and program management team leader.

“I am currently serving as the acting assistant division administrator, responsible for developing and implementing federal aid oversight initiatives and stewardship functions,” Jacobs said.

Jacobs said his best memories at Kentucky State include becoming a member of Omega Phi Phi, playing collegiate football and serving as second vice president of the Student Government Association.

Jacobs said the most important lesson he learned at Kentucky State is to establish relationships and network. Jacobs encouraged current and future Thorobreds to graduate with the highest GPA possible and participate in internships while completing degree requirements.
