Kentucky State University recently welcomed a new director of veterans and military student affairs.

Dr. John C. Gregory served over 20 years on active duty in the Army before retiring as a lieutenant colonel in June.

“I came to Kentucky State because I wanted to be part of a team of highly capable critical thinkers and leaders who are not ashamed to pursue excellence,” Gregory said. “I also felt that Kentucky State University President M. Christopher Brown II was building something special and I wanted to be part of it.”

Working at Kentucky State provides Gregory an opportunity to serve in an administrative capacity as well as on the faculty. Gregory will also serve as an assistant professor of public administration.

“I fell in love with teaching and engaging students during my experience (as an adjunct faculty) at the University of Louisville and I wanted that to continue after I retired from the Army,” Gregory said.

Gregory’s Army career included two deployments to Iraq and one to Kosovo. Gregory’s assignments included platoon leader with the 101st Airborne Division, company commander with the 276th Engineer Battalion, aide de camp and deputy G3 with the 29th Infantry Division and senior police advisor for the Baghdad Operations Command Advisory Team with the 25th Infantry Division. In his last assignment, Gregory served as the deputy assistant chief of staff in the reserve component directorate of the U.S. Army Cadet Command.

Gregory earned a bachelor’s in history from Virginia Military Institute, a master’s in criminal justice from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Ph.D. in public policy and administration from the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Gregory is a member of the American Society of Public Administration (ASPA), the National Criminal Justice Honor Society, the National Honor Society for Public Affairs and Administration, the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, Rocks, Inc. and a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
