Kentucky State University provides access to summer learning

Summer camps and programs began June 9 at Kentucky State University and will continue through the end of July, as the University provides access to learning year-round.

AgDiscovery began June 9 in the Cooperative Extension Building and concludes June 22. AgDiscovery is a summer camp outreach program designed to introduce middle through high school students to career paths in the agricultural sciences field.

Upward Bound began June 10 in the Julian M. Carroll Academic Services Building (ASB) and concludes July 15. Upward Bound is a federally funded program that provides support to participants whose goals are to receive a college degree. Participants will focus on robotics, drone presentations and agriculture.

The Verizon Innovative Learning Program began June 10 and concludes June 28. The summer academy is the culminating event for the yearlong program which engages students in STEM subjects and aims to increase interest in attending college.

The Promising Youth Center for Excellence Summer Institute for youth ages 9-17 began June 10 and concludes July 26. Approximately 90 students will participate.

The Kentucky State University Pre-College Academy begins June 22 and concludes July 26. The Pre-College Academy is a five-week, academic enrichment, residential program within University College designed as a transition between high school and college. The academy allows first-year students to earn up to nine credit hours, experience campus life, create effective study habits and become acclimated to college before their first college term begins in the fall.

The Summer Apprenticeship Program also begins July 7 in the Cooperative Extension Building and concludes July 26. The Summer Apprenticeship Program is designed to prepare students for college life while exposing them to different career opportunities in STEM—science, technology, engineering and mathematics—fields.

The Kentucky State University athletic department will also be hosting summer camps.

The volleyball team will host camps June 8-9, July 19-20 and August 10. Campers can sign up online or contact head coach DiShondra Goree at dishondra.goree@kysu.edu or (502) 597-6509.

The baseball team will host a camp for middle and high school students June 17-21 and June 24-28. Campers can sign up online or contact head coach Rob Henry at rob.henry@kysu.edu or (502) 597-6018.

The men’s basketball team will host a camp for children in grades K-8 June 24-27. Campers can go online to sign up or for more information.
