Kentucky State University professor to receive award from Carter G. Woodson Academy
A Kentucky State University professor is set to receive an award from Carter G. Woodson Academy in Lexington.
Dr. Herman E. Walston, professor of child development and family relations, will receive the Spokesmen Award during the school’s 3rd African American Achievement Awards show. The show is sponsored by the high school African American Heritage class and is completely student led.
Walston is in his 43rd year at Kentucky State. Walston administers the Please Call Me Mister project, funded by the U.S. Office of Health and Human Services, for middle school African-American and Hispanic students in grades six through eight.
“I really enjoy making a difference in young people’s lives, especially those who are at-risk,” Walston previously said.
According to its website, Carter G. Woodson Academy provides an advanced and rigorous curriculum that meets the new common core standards through the lens of African American history, culture, and culturally responsive teaching and learning strategies. This traditional college preparatory program, which launched in the fall of 2012, serves at-promise males in grades 6-12 who have unlimited potential.
