FRANKFORT — Kentucky State University’s inaugural High School Day brought hundreds of students from all over Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio and beyond.

The day was packed with activities for prospective students to sample life at Kentucky State. Academic programs, athletics, and student organizations were highlighted in a browsing session to begin the day in the William Exum Center. Greetings and words of wisdom were shared by Kentucky State University President M. Christopher Brown II, Board of Regents Chair Dr. Elaine Farris, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Debbie Thomas and many others.

“Kentucky State is a place where everyone knows you and sees you around on campus,” President Brown said. “We have quality student organizations so that you’re able to have fun outside the classroom.”

“Kentucky State University is the best-kept secret in Kentucky,” Farris said. “We nurture our students. They will leave here with a degree.”

Roger and Terry Malone from Jeffersonville, Indiana brought their daughter and a group from Jeffersonville High School called For the Culture, which is a cultural and academic awareness group. Terry has several family members that attended KSU, and her aunt is a former Miss KSU.

Roger said their experience at High School Day was very positive and pleasant.
“Everyone welcomed us and everything is very organized and planned out,” Roger said.
Nevon Myles and Eva’n Young, both from Mt. Auburn International Academy in Cincinnati, Ohio, said they found out about Kentucky State through their high school band director.

Myles said High School Day was a nice experience and very informative.
Noelle Gray from Jeffersonville High School in Jeffersonville, Indiana said High School Day was a great way for high school students to check out Kentucky State.

“The atmosphere is really nice,” Gray said.

Jaleyah Northington, also from Jeffersonville High School, said she learned a lot about the University.

“Everyone has been nice and welcoming,” Northington said. “I’m learning about a lot; not just (academic) majors, but a lot of other things about the campus, too.”

Tyra Malone, also from Jeffersonville High School, said everyone from Kentucky State had been very supportive. She said High School Day was pretty fun and had a nice atmosphere.

After learning more about the University, students were treated to a fair-style event outside of the Exum Center, where they enjoyed food trucks, a concert, a Greek organization stroll-off, video games, free t-shirts and more.

A battle of the bands and campus tours concluded the on-campus events. Afterwards, students and families had the opportunity to attend the Kentucky State University football game against West Virginia State University.

Vice President for Enrollment Management and Brand Identity Clara Ross Stamps said High School Day and other events sponsored by the Office of Admissions under the leadership of Director Justin Mathis are designed to expose high school students and others to Kentucky State’s academic programs, rich campus culture and encourage them to consider continuing their education here.
