Dear Thorobred Community,
Welcome back to campus and to the Spring 2026 semester!
As we begin this term together, I want to acknowledge the profound impact of the events of December on our community. Last month, Kentucky State University experienced a senseless tragedy that resulted in the death of one of our students and critical injuries to another. We continue to grieve the loss of De’Jon Fox, Jr. and hold in our hearts the student who remains in recovery from critical injuries.
The loss of any student is heartbreaking, and many of you may still be carrying grief, fear, anger, or uncertainty. Please know that you are not alone. Your safety, well-being, and sense of belonging remain our highest priorities.
As we continue this semester together, moving forward does not mean forgetting or minimizing what has happened. It means doing so with care — making space for your feelings, supporting one another, and leaning on the resources available to you.
For our students: please reach out to faculty and staff mentors and the support services designed to help you navigate this time. For our faculty and staff: please continue to be there for one another and for our students. Together, let us ensure Kentucky State remains a student-centered community where compassion, dignity, and support are always present.
At the same time, the University is committed to enhancing the systems and safeguards that support our campus. We will continue our focused efforts to maintain a safe and stable learning environment while advancing the academic and co-curricular experiences that brought you to Kentucky State.
Even in this difficult moment, there are reminders of our collective strength as Thorobreds. We have made meaningful progress through our work with SACSCOC on accreditation, continued to invest in innovative academic programs, and celebrated a proud Kentucky State football season — one that reflects teamwork, discipline, and shared purpose. These moments affirm that, together, we are capable of triumph, resilience, and forward movement.
Again, no one is expected to move through this time alone. If you need support — or if you are seeking trusted information and next steps — please visit kysu.edu/support. We have added an FAQ section and welcome your questions and concerns via the link provided there, which will help as we continue to update the page.
May this semester bring you focus in your studies, support when you need it, and confidence in your place at Kentucky State University. You belong here, and this community stands with you — always.
Sincerely,
Dr. Koffi C. Akakpo
President
Kentucky State University
