Kelsey Scott, best known for her role as Anne Northup in the Oscar-winning “12 Years a Slave” and as Wes Gibbins’ mother, Rose, on “How to Get Away With Murder,” is the featured speaker.

Scott’s credits also include “Insecure,” “NCIS,” “Dynasty” and “True Detective”. Scott is also a Daytime Emmy nominee for her guest star role on “Giants” and a Primetime Emmy nominee for her leading role on “Fear the Walking Dead: Passage.”

Scott is a product of an HBCU, earning her bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from Florida A&M University. Scott earned an MFA in film from Florida State University.

Multi-talented, Scott’s screenwriting career began with the Sony Pictures thrillers “Motives.” Scott wrote the film’s sequel and continues to write commissioned scripts, in addition to shepherding original projects. Scott spearheaded the first screenwriting curriculum at Golden West College and later returned to Florida State as a visiting filmmaker in residence.

Scott’s service includes serving as a celebrity ambassador for “Kids in the Spotlight,” a non-profit that enlists professional filmmakers to train foster care youth to create, write, cast and star in their own short films. Scott also works with “WriteGirl,” a non-profit that matches professional women writers with teenage girls who would not otherwise have access to creative mentors.

Scott is a proud member of SAG-AFTRA, Actors’ Equity Association, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Kentucky State University President M. Christopher Brown II will also present Women of Distinction awards to four recipients.
