Kentucky State University President M. Christopher Brown II focused on the institution’s shift from surviving to thriving when he convened faculty and staff Jan. 7-8 for Encampment 2019. President Brown led the campus in continued preparation for Kentucky State’s upcoming SACSCOC (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges) Reaffirmation.

The two-day event officially began the second half of the academic year for Kentucky State. Encampment brings together Frankfort community leaders, faculty, staff, students and alumni in finding new and effective ways of developing ideas, pursuing innovative strategies and applying knowledge for the public good.

Seminar leader Dr. Joseph H. Silver Sr., president of Silver & Associates, a full-service education consulting firm, told those assembled, “SACS is everybody’s business. You can’t sit on the sidelines.”

Silver encouraged campus stakeholders to become more process-oriented rather than people-oriented to aid in preparing for SACS Reaffirmation.

“Student success should be your highest outcome,” Silver said when discussing assessing various outcomes across the University.

President Brown gave a presentation entitled “Be S.M.A.R.T., Focus on the Finish” during the afternoon portion of Encampment.

“We have a yeoman’s task ahead of us,” President Brown said. “We want to make sure we stay focused on institutional intentions.”

President Brown said Kentucky State will advocate for a student-focused model and that the success and graduation of students must be the institution’s highest priority.

“Everything that we’re doing is to deliver the best quality programs to our students,” President Brown said.
