Kentucky State University President M. Christopher Brown II will officially welcome the campus community back for the fall semester when he convenes faculty and staff August 13 for Encampment 2018.

The day-long event kicks off the academic year for Kentucky State. Encampment brings together Frankfort community leaders, faculty, staff, students and alumni in finding new and effective ways of developing ideas, pursuing innovative strategies and applying knowledge for the public good and in order to better position Kentucky State for continued academic excellence and goal attainment.

“Encampment continues our campus transformation, fosters collaboration and informs the campus community of strategic initiatives that will help us achieve our multi-year goals,” President Brown said. “Working together, we seek our greatest opportunities to thrive.”

Encampment seminar leader Dr. Dorothy C. Yancy is the former president of Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) and Shaw University. She is the first female president of an institution in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Yancy is known for her institutional management and fundraising efforts for academic and athletic deliverance. Yancy marked her 14.5-year tenure at JCSU raising over $145 million through two significant capital campaigns and increased the University’s endowment by nearly $50 million.

Yancy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and social science from Johnson C. Smith University, a Master of Arts degree in history from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a Ph.D. in political science from Atlanta University. Yancy’s legacy is marked at both JCSU and Shaw with buildings named in her honor.

Encampment begins at 8 a.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. This public event includes continental breakfast and lunch. Participants are encouraged to wear their favorite Kentucky State t-shirt and jeans.
