Burgin named acting vice president for Enrollment Management and Student Engagement

Dr. Jeffery T. Burgin Jr., associate vice president and dean of students at Kentucky State University, will serve as the acting vice president for Enrollment Management and Student Engagement, effective immediately. Dr. Thomas J. Calhoun Jr. is currently on personal family leave.

President M. Christopher Brown II said, “Dr. Burgin will provide stability to the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Engagement. He has been an able second-in-command to Dr. Calhoun.”

Burgin brings extensive higher education experience into his new role, having served at a variety of institutions throughout the eastern United States. Before transitioning from his position as associate vice president and dean of students, Burgin served as associate provost and dean of students at Belmont University in Tennessee; vice president for student affairs at Alabama Agricultural & Mechanical University; associate dean of students and director of multicultural affairs at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga; assistant dean of student life at Washington & Jefferson College in Pennsylvania; coordinator for student affairs at Florida State University and assistant director for multicultural programs at Ohio University.

Burgin is a member of the American Council for Education (ACE), the National Association of Student Affairs Professionals (NASAP), the Association for Student Conduct Administrators (ASCA), the NAACP, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) and the American College Personnel Association (ACPA).

“I am thankful for this opportunity and the confidence the senior staff has in me to sustain the good work of Enrollment Management and Student Engagement initiated under Vice President Calhoun. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Calhoun and his family at this time,” Burgin said. “I will work to ensure activities continue uninterrupted as we work to complement the academic mission and to enhance the overall experience of our students.”

Burgin earned a bachelor’s degree in African-American studies/pre-law at the University of Cincinnati, a master’s degree in college student personnel from Ohio University and a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Alabama.
