A former Kentucky State University athletic director was appointed as the secretary of the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet recently by Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin.

Derrick Ramsey, who served as athletic director for four years until 2004 when he was appointed to a cabinet position by former governor Ernie Fletcher, has decades of experience working in Kentucky’s higher education system.

According to a press release from the governor’s office, Ramsey developed the Student-Athlete Excellence in Academics program at Kentucky State. Under his leadership, Kentucky State athletics produced more Presidential Scholars than any other school department.

The Education and Workforce Development Cabinet is responsible for educating, preparing and training Kentucky’s current and future workforce.

Ramsey was the first African-American starting quarterback for the University of Kentucky. He had a nine-year career in the NFL, including a Super Bowl championship in 1981.
