Three Kentucky State University students were recently selected as interns for the 2018 Kentucky General Assembly.

Marelle Adams, Trevor Odell Stephens and Michael Weaver are serving during the current legislative session.

Adams is a graduating senior from Columbus, Ohio. She said she first became interested in state government when she became a criminal justice major and decided she wanted to impact and educate her community.

Adams said she applied for the internship to gain more experience working in her field.

“I look forward to this experience that Kentucky State University has prepared me for,” Adams said.

Stevens is a junior political science major from Horse Cave. He became interested in state government in the sixth grade when he joined the Kentucky Youth Assembly (KYA). He and Adams are working for Kentucky State Senator Gerald A. Neal, a Kentucky State alumnus.

“The opportunity to intern with Senator Neal is amazing,” Stevens said. “I’m grateful for this experience.”

Weaver, a music education major from Kansas City, Missouri, said he became interested in state government when he realized his career aspirations included becoming president of a university. He’s interning with State Representative George Brown Jr.

“I’m motivated to work in state government to continue to build a bond with Kentucky State and Frankfort,” Weaver said.

The 2018 session began Jan. 2 and is scheduled to conclude in April.
