A Kentucky State University alumnus and long-time advocate became the first African-American elected as a Democratic leader in the Kentucky House of Representatives.

Rep. Derrick Graham was chosen by state legislators as one of three House Democratic Caucus leaders for the next two years, according to a news release from the Office of the House Democratic Caucus.

“I want to thank my fellow caucus members for their support and look forward to hitting the ground running as House Democratic Caucus Chair,” said Rep. Graham, whose 57th House District includes a large portion of Franklin County. “We have a dynamic and diverse caucus that brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the Capitol, and together, we will do all we can to keep improving public education and the health and well-being of our citizens.”

Graham recently earned re-election to his ninth term in the House. Graham has served since 2003 and previously held a leadership position as the chairman of the House Education Committee.

Graham completed his bachelor’s degree at Kentucky State and earned a master’s degree at The Ohio State University.
