Kentucky State University was the host location for a three-day training provided by Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear and the Office of Victims Advocacy.

The three-day training focused on investigating and prosecuting campus sexual assaults. The training was intended for teams of law enforcement, prosecutors and advocates.

“Campus sexual assault is far more common than most people realize,” Beshear said in a press release issued by the Attorney General’s office. “While one in five women and one in 16 men were sexually assaulted while in college, in 2015 only 36 sexual assaults were reported to law enforcement on Kentucky’s public university campuses.”

Kentucky State President M. Christopher Brown II spoke at the event, welcoming all participants to the campus on the hill.

Sessions included dispelling myths to more effectively investigate and prosecute campus rape, strategies for effectively investigating and prosecuting alcohol facilitated sexual assault, lessons from survivors and many others.

All eight public universities were represented at the training, as well as many private institutions.

According to the press release, Beshear and his Office of Victims Advocacy have been working for the last two years to seek justice for victims of violent crimes such as domestic violence and sexual assault.
