MindBody Reset
Kentucky State University’s Louisville Cooperative Extension Office teamed up with Hill Street Missionary Baptist Church to present “MindBody Reset”—a community-based program that focused on nutrition, physical activity, lifestyle and stress management. Held on every Saturday between October 18 and November 22, this hands-on program assisted adults with a jump start on their health.
Program Highlights:
- Students learned practical nutrition tips and kitchen skills while crafting healthy recipes including the Kentucky State University green smoothies.
- Nutrition education and physical activity were led by Nicole Daniels, who focused on real life nutrition, cooking demonstrations and beginner level physical activity.
- Lifestyle and holistic health techniques were taught by Emily Smith, who focused on pathways to make meaningful lasting change like goal setting, stress management, and developing healthy coping skills.
Direct economic impact details – TOTAL: $6302
A total of 10 participants attended at least one session of the program with 8 participants completing at least 4 of 6 sessions. Five participants attended all six sessions and were given a choice of Nutribullet or Crockpot slow cooker as a reinforcement item, along with and a certificate to recognize their efforts. A certificate of appreciation was also presented to the representative with the host site.
Health impact details-
- participant found a neighborhood walking partner, slept better with increased physical activity, began cooking more meals at home, and avoided statins by reducing high cholesterol to normal levels;
- participant met with a registered dietitian to address food choices for medical condition;
- two participants began changing their snack patterns to recommendations;
- two participants had annual physical exams and both lowered blood pressure from high to normal range; and,
- participant manages type 2 diabetes and decreased the need for insulin so much that the doctor halved the prescription, lost 11 pounds and began following the structure of MyPlate when choosing foods.
