New-student move-in launches the academic year as campus renewal welcomes a new generation

New students and their families arrived at Kentucky State University on Thursday, Aug. 13, carrying boxes, meeting roommates, and beginning a new chapter as Thorobreds.

The annual move-in welcomed first-time freshmen and transfer students to campus ahead of the start of fall classes Monday, Aug. 17. With additional new students who will live off campus, the incoming class has exceeded 400 students so far, consistent with enrollment in recent years.

Because registration and enrollment verification remain underway, the number will continue to change. The University’s official fall enrollment count will not be calculated until the Oct. 31 census date.

Faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members helped families unload vehicles, carry belongings, provide directions, and settle into the residence halls. Volunteers included members of several Greek-letter organizations, Kentucky State alumni, and representatives from a local church.

“Move-in day reminds us that Kentucky State is a community,” Kentucky State President Dr. Koffi C. Akakpo said. “The volunteers who gave their time to welcome our newest Thorobreds demonstrated the care and support that will surround these students throughout their University experience.”

For students assigned to Chandler Hall, move-in also marked the reopening of one of Kentucky State’s most historic buildings.

Constructed in 1939, Chandler Hall has been transformed through a nearly $10 million renovation that modernized student rooms, infrastructure, safety systems, and shared spaces while preserving the building’s historic character. The residence hall now includes a reimagined ground-floor lobby for gathering, studying, mentoring, and student programming, as well as an updated laundry room, welcome desk, and apartment for an on-site resident director.

Chandler Hall is the most recently completed project within an historic $183 million investment by the Kentucky General Assembly in Kentucky State University from 2022 through 2028. The investment supports the renewal of academic buildings, residence halls, roads, parking areas, and other campus infrastructure, as well as the development of new facilities.

The University will celebrate Chandler Hall’s transformation with a ribbon-cutting ceremony during Homecoming. Former residents will be invited to return, tour the building, and share photographs, memories, and stories from their years in the residence hall.

Since opening nearly 90 years ago, Chandler Hall has served generations of Kentucky State women. Alumnae have recalled the friendships, traditions, late-night study sessions, and sense of independence they found within its walls. Their stories will help connect the building’s history with the students now making it their home.

Thursday’s arrival of new students represented the first stage of the University’s fall opening. Continuing students will move into campus housing Sunday, Aug. 16, before classes begin the following morning.

For Kentucky State’s newest students, move-in was a day of firsts: a first room on campus, a first meeting with a roommate, and a first glimpse of the community that will support them. For Chandler Hall, it was a long-awaited return.

Together, they opened an academic year grounded in Kentucky State’s history and focused on its future.
