Dear Thorobred Family,

The work of welcoming students back begins long before they arrive. Last Friday, more than 100 members of our University community demonstrated that shared commitment by giving their time and energy to clean and care for our campus as we prepare for a new academic year.

I am grateful to everyone who participated. While the results are visible across campus, the significance of the day extended beyond what could be accomplished in only a few hours. It demonstrated the strength of a community whose members take pride in the place we share and recognize that each of us has a role in creating the environment our students deserve.
 
That spirit of shared commitment and responsibility is especially meaningful as we prepare for the beginning of a new academic year. Across campus, roads and parking areas are being paved, residence halls and classrooms are being prepared, grounds are being maintained, and technology is being readied. Faculty and staff throughout the University are also planning for the many academic, student-support, and operational needs that accompany the opening of a new semester.
 
Some of this work is highly visible, though much of it happens quietly through the daily efforts of people whose contributions may not always receive public recognition. Taken together, however, these efforts will shape the experience students and families have when they arrive on The Hill.
 
As a reminder, new students will begin moving in on August 13, followed by returning students on August 16, with classes beginning August 17. As those dates approach, we recognize that preparing the campus is not simply about renewing buildings, grounds, or operations. It is about creating a welcoming place where students can learn, grow, build relationships, and pursue their goals with confidence.
 
The Commonwealth’s historic investment in Kentucky State is helping us preserve and renew our physical campus, but buildings and infrastructure alone cannot create a thriving university. That requires people who see what needs to be done and step forward to help, whether by participating in a service day, preparing a classroom, assisting a student, strengthening a process, or completing one of the countless other tasks necessary for a successful semester.
 
The difference we make is greatest when we make it together.
 
Thank you again to everyone who participated last Friday and to all those whose continuing efforts are preparing The Hill for the arrival of our students. As we look toward the new academic year, let us carry forward that same spirit of service, shared commitment, and responsibility.
