Kentucky State University’s “Bluegrass Small Ruminant Solutions” opens with first episodes on winter goat management and hoof trimming

FRANKFORT, Ky. — For sheep and goat producers, small management decisions can quickly become costly problems if they are missed at the wrong time of year. A new video series from Kentucky State University is designed to help producers stay ahead of those challenges with practical, research-based guidance rooted in the realities of the farm.

Bluegrass Small Ruminant Solutions, developed by Dr. Valens Niyigena, assistant professor of livestock nutrition, will deliver timely educational videos focused on the seasonal and emerging issues that shape small-ruminant production in Kentucky and beyond. The first two installments, Winter Goat Management and Hoof Trimming, are ready for release.

“Our goal is to bridge the gap between research and the farm gate,” Dr. Niyigena said.

From hoof care to cold weather managementThat goal is central to a series built around real-world application. Rather than offering broad or abstract advice, Bluegrass Small Ruminant Solutions is intended to give producers science-driven recommendations they can use to improve animal health, strengthen productivity, and support farm profitability.

Future episodes will address topics such as breeding and reproductive management, parasite control, animal health and welfare, nutrition strategies, forage and pasture management, farm business planning, and sustainable production practices. Videos will be released throughout the year to align with seasonal production needs and industry developments.

The series also reflects Kentucky State’s land-grant mission by bringing together research, education, and Extension in a format designed for direct producer benefit. It is expected to create hands-on opportunities for students in animal science and related agricultural programs to help develop and present content, connecting classroom learning with the needs of agricultural communities.

By highlighting ongoing research, demonstration work, and field-based applications, Bluegrass Small Ruminant Solutions underscores Kentucky State’s commitment to advancing sustainable agriculture while preparing the next generation of agricultural leaders.
