Kentucky State University's (KSU) Promising Youth Center for Excellence (PYCE) has been a steadfast ally to at risk children and youth in Frankfort, Kentucky, nurturing their potential and guiding them toward brighter futures for over two decades. Led by Dr. Herman Walston, a Professor of Child Development and Family Relations, and Mr. David Fowler, Director, PYCE has been a sanctuary for countless young souls seeking refuge from life's challenges.
PYCE recently received a $250,000 Afterschool Capacity Building Grant from the USDA 1890 Institution Teaching, Research, and Extension Capacity Building Grants (CBG) Program. This grant is a testament to the PYCE team's unwavering commitment and recognition of their tireless efforts in serving the community.
Dr. Walston, with great enthusiasm, highlights The collaborative nature of this effort. "This unique collaboration will significantly enhance KSU's extension capability," he says. "It will serve as a new 4-H extension model, a beacon of hope that could be replicated by other 1890 universities, schools, and community organizations."
With this grant, PYCE is on the brink of a transformative phase. The funds will be directed towards bolstering the center's infrastructure and programs, promising a more profound impact on the lives of the youth it serves. This grant is more than just financial support—it's a validation of their vision and an affirmation of the importance of their work.
For Dr. Walston, this grant represents more than just a boost to PYCE's resources; it's an opportunity to pioneer a new youth development model. Through collaborative efforts with 4-H Extension outreach and academic programs on campus, PYCE aims to create a holistic support system for youth facing the daunting challenges of chronic stress, opioid misuse, and trauma. This is not just about intervening in their lives but empowering them to thrive despite adversity, and we invite you to be a part of this journey.
The PYCE team feels optimistic and proud as news of the grant spreads. They're embarking on a new journey with endless possibilities to make a difference in the lives of the youth they serve. With gratitude and determination, they dive headfirst into the task ahead, paving the way for a brighter future for young people in Frankfort and beyond.
