Kentucky State University Professor Presents at the 2023 Virtual Congreso Documentologia
Dr. Mara Merlino, Professor of Psychology and Sociology and Coordinator of the MA Program in Interdisciplinary Behavioral Science, recently presented an invited lecture titled "Identifying and Mitigating Cognitive Bias in Forensic Decisionmaking Situations" at the 2023 virtual Congreso Documentologia, hosted at the Campus Fornese in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The 60-minute lecture introduced attendees to cognitive ergonomics and cognitive human factors, demonstrated examples of illusions of sensation and perception, and gave examples of how cognitive bias impacts the interpretation of information across a variety of situations. The lecture concluded with a discussion of research findings from Dr. Merlino's and Dr. Freemean Taylor's research on the reliability and validity of the methods and procedures of forensic document examination, with recommendations for mitigating possible sources of cognitive bias in forensic science decisionmaking.
