KSU pinning ceremony marks students’ transition into nursing profession

Posted on May 12, 2022

Each year, on the Thursday before Spring Commencement, Kentucky State University holds its Nursing Pinning Ceremony. A time-honored tradition, the pinning formalizes the transition from student to professional nurse. This year, 15 students were pinned.

The modern pinning ceremony dates back to the 19th century when Florence Nightingale was honored with the Red Cross of St. George for her care of wounded soldiers during the Crimean War. As a nurse academic, Nurse Nightingale, in turn, presented medals of excellence to selected nursing students. Currently, the pin is a symbol of the practice of nursing and the educational preparation of the wearer.

Students also receive a rose to symbolize their official entry and welcome into the nursing profession.

Congratulations to the nursing Class of 2022!
