Kentucky State University student earns national broadcasting award

A Kentucky State University student recently placed in a national broadcasting competition.

Oyuky Benitez, a senior in the School of the Humanities and Performing Arts, won second place in the College Media Association’s (CMA) Pinnacle awards for best audio special event coverage during its virtual convention Oct 22-24.

Benitez's story featured several events sponsored by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Over the summer, Benitez also won best short run podcast for “DACA: A Student’s Perspective” this summer from the Louisville professional chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).

Benitez is currently studying broadcast journalism under Dr. David Shabazz, assistant professor at Kentucky State. Shabazz received the four-year broadcast adviser Honor Roll award from CMA.
