A Kentucky State University business professor continues to garner success in the classroom and on the global music stage.

Dr. Swagata “Ban” Banerjee, one half of the musical duo Ban Brothers, was recently honored by the Akademia Music Awards.

Banerjee and his older brother, Gautam, were recently named 2018 artist of the year during the Akademia Gala Event in Los Angeles. The duo was recognized for extraordinary originality and songcraft in the world beat genre.

Ban Brothers also took home the 2019 Akademia Executive Award for outstanding creativity, artistry and professional achievement in the field of music.

“We were immensely surprised to be gifted with two more Akademia awards during their annual awards ceremony,” Banerjee said. “We were extremely pleasantly shocked, as we didn’t expect any of those, the competition being tough among artists from all over the world in many different genres.”

Banerjee earned a bachelor’s and master’s in economics from the University of Calcutta and a master’s in resource and applied economics from the University of Nevada in Reno. He earned a Ph.D. in agricultural economics from the University of Georgia in Athens.

Previously he worked as a post-doctoral associate at Mississippi State University’s Delta Research & Extension Center and held faculty positions at Alabama A&M University and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
