A Kentucky State University student recently presented undergraduate research at the Kentucky Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (KAHPERD) conference.

Amani Williams, a senior exercise science major from Scotch Plains, New Jersey, presented research on HIV knowledge among students at Kentucky State University.

“I had a great experience at the KAHPERD conference,” Williams said. “It was a poster presentation during the lunch hour of the entire conference. Any of the participants in the conference came and asked questions about my poster to get a deeper understanding of the research that was completed. Not only did I get a chance to speak with participants, but I got the opportunity to speak with other students who completed posters, as well.”

Williams said she was inspired to research HIV because it is one of the many health diseases and disorders that affect the black population.

“As one of the HBCUs in Kentucky, it was a great study to see if students were knowledgeable on a topic that affects the black population directly,” Williams said.

Williams said her research has led to further involvement on campus.

“My research has helped me try to initiate and inform students on the long-lasting effects of HIV,” Williams said. “This research has led me to implement more events and become more involved on campus to inform students, as I am the president of Driving Our Peers Education (D.O.P.E).”
