Associate Provost Dr. Thomas congratulates Martin Luther King, Jr. scholarship winners

LEXINGTON – Kentucky State University (KSU) Associate Provost/Associate Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness Dr. Deneia Thomas congratulated and presented one-year scholarships to students Lizbeth Perez and Charles Simpson, Jr. during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Celebration on Monday, January 16 at the Lexington Convention Center Heritage Hall.

Last year’s scholarship recipient, Victoria Poole, also was recognized during the celebration.

The celebration included guest speaker Dr. Otis Moss, III, Senior Pastor of Trinity United Church in Chicago.

2017 DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

  • Lizbeth Perez is senior at Paul Lawrence Dunbar and a student in the Opportunity Middle College at Bluegrass Community and Technical College.  In her essay, Liz, who is from Lexington, Ky., said “that for over 159 years historically black colleges like KSU have shaped our history. They are shaping our future, including mine.”
  • Charles Simpson, Jr. is a senior at Madison Central High School in Richmond, Ky.  In his essay, Charles wrote that he is “personally appreciative of HBCUs because they laid the foundation for the African American community as a whole and had encouraged him to continue to pursue his ambitions for his future.”  The Berea, Ky., native also stated in his essay: “KSU and other HBCUs inspire students from all races and ethnic backgrounds to work diligently toward goals because that will change the lives of not only African Americans but all Americans.”
  • Victoria Poole is the 2016 award recipient. She has completed her first semester at KSU  with a 3.5 GPA.
