Students Win Awards At Recent Kentucky Academy Of Science Meeting

Several Kentucky State University students won awards at the 99th annual meeting of the Kentucky Academy of Science, which was held at Morehead State University on Nov. 8-9.

More than 800 students and mentors attended the meeting and made presentations.

The following KSU students won awards:

Agricultural Sciences Section:

First Place: Doug Blair for his undergraduate student oral presentation titled “Comparison of Different Light Technologies for Indoor Aquaponic Production of White-Stemmed Pak Choi Brassica rapa var. chinensis.”

First Place: Alex Squadrito for his graduate student oral competition presentation titled “Effect of Live Versus Commercially Available Prepared Diets on Growth and Survival Rates of Larval Paddlefish.”

Second Place: Richard Bryant for his graduate student oral competition presentation titled “Restaurant Perceptions of Locally Grown Freshwater Seafood in Kentucky and Ohio.”

Third Place: Jon Cambron for his graduate student oral competition presentation titled “Sweet Potatoes for Low-Input Food and Ethanol Production in Kentucky.”

Botany Section

First Place: Rebecca Graves for her undergraduate student poster competition presentation titled “Correlation of acetogenin activity in twig and ripe fruit of six pawpaw [Asimina triloba (L.) Dunal] varieties as determined by the brine shrimp test.”

Health Sciences Section

First Place: Victoria Mathis for her undergraduate student oral presentation titled “Assessment of Oxidative Stress in Young African American Population with Metabolic Syndrome (MetS): A College Study.”

Other undergraduate students from KSU presenting were Catherine Croft, Desira Vance, Emily Lancaster, Erika Parks, Jiashuo Ma, Sarah Young and Stephanie Bates. Other graduate students from KSU presenting were Godardo Juanich, Justina Riddick, Denita Brown, Marie Blacksmith, Regina Hill and Zachary Kupchinsky.

Mentors from KSU who also gave presentations at the meeting included Dr. George Antonious, Dr. Michael Bomford, Sheri Crabtree, Karen Friley, Dr. Lingyu Huang, Jeremy Lowe, Dr. Li Lu, Anthony Silvernail, Eric Turley and Dr. Changzheng Wang. Mentors not presenting at the meeting included Dr. Kirk Pomper, Dr. John Sedlacek, Leigh Anne Bright, Shawn Coyle, Dr. Rafael Cuevas-Uribe, Dr. Bob Durborow, Dr. Steve Mims, Phyllis Rogers, Dr. Tamara Sluss, Dr. James Tidwell, Dr. Avinash Tope and Dr. Tom Webster. Susan Templeton also participated in the KAS meeting; she serves on the Executive Committee of the KAS Governing Board and as the KAS newsletter editor. Dr. Hideka Kobayashi was elected chair of agricultural sciences section and Dr. Mike Bomford was elected secretary of the agricultural sciences section for the 2014 KAS meeting.
