About the Office of Sponsored Programs

The Office of Sponsored Programs was organized on July 1, 2004 with the purpose of : 1)  generating extramural resources in support of the University and its programs through the competitive proposal process;  2)    assisting KSU and grant recipients with the administration of funded grants/contracts.  The Office is an expansion of the Grants and Contracts unit which had existed at the University for many years.  Whereas the Grants and Contracts unit was primarily limited to pre-award functions, responsibilities for the Office of Sponsored Programs is much more expansive, covering the range of competitive proposal/contract  operations from conception to project closure.

Scholarly pursuits, research and academic resources are important to Kentucky State’s vitality.  Frequently, higher education institutions are ranked according to their ability to attract outside funding through the competitive proposal process.  In recent years, KSU has enjoyed enormous success in gaining outside support from both public and private agencies.

During the past five years, the University has received 335 funded grants in the total amount of $37,536,045.  This amount excludes $4.8 Million in Smith-Lever and Evans-Allen formula funding received annually from the United States Department of Agriculture in support of the institution’s land grant mission.

As Kentucky State moves toward renewed excellence in education during a time of shrinking public support for higher education,  increased emphasis will continue to be placed on the Sponsored Programs process to attract essential resources.  This increased emphasis necessitates the establishment of cogent policies and procedures governing Sponsored Programs.  Hence, the Office of Sponsored Programs was initiated.
