About CITI Program

Kentucky State University has procured the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Program) at the University of Miami.  The CITI Program is a web-based research education platform.  In an effort to ensure Responsible Conduct in Research (RCR), KSU faculty, staff and students are encouraged to complete the following applicable training modules:

Animal Care and Use (IACUC)

CITI Program’s Animal Care and Use (ACU) materials cover general principles of ethical care and use of animals in research, training, and testing, as well as focusing on the care and use of particular species. Content is designed to meet United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) requirements for basic training in the humane care and use of animals.

Biosafety and Biosecurity (BSS)

CITI Program’s BSS content covers the principles of biosafety and biosecurity, including safe use and containment of biohazardous agents.

Human Subjects Research (HSR)

CITI Program’s HSR series covers the historical development of human subject protections, as well as current information on regulatory and ethical issues. It consists of modules from two basic tracks, Biomedical (Biomed) and Social-Behavioral-Educational (SBE), and a set of Additional Modules of Interest. Many of the basic modules have corresponding sets of refresher modules that are intended to provide learners with a highlighted review of what was covered in the basic modules.

Three additional standalone courses are also available: Institutional/Signatory Official: Human Subject ResearchIRB Administration, and IRB Chair. The Institutional/Signatory Official: Human Subject Research course provides a general introduction to the roles and responsibilities of the institutional official at a Federalwide Assurance (FWA) holding organization. The IRB Administration course offers members of an Institutional Review Board’s (IRB) administrative office and Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) a comprehensive review of the critical areas associated with IRB and IRB office operations. The IRB Chair course provides detailed training for current and future IRB chairs.

Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)

CITI Program’s RCR series consists of a basic course, complemented with a set of additional modules of interest, and a refresher course. Both courses contain modules that cover core norms, principles, regulations, and rules governing the practice of research. Both the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) have policies that require certain categories of researchers to receive RCR training. RCR is increasingly viewed as an essential component of training, regardless of a researcher’s source of funding.

Conflicts of Interest (COI)

A course covering the revised Public Health Service (PHS) regulations associated with financial conflicts of interest and an investigator’s responsibilities relating to the disclosure of “Significant Financial Interests” is also available.

Note: The next steps are numbered 1-7. These steps will collect information to register your account and place you in the correct course based on your institutional settings.

Step 1: Chose a participating institution from the search box.

All active institutions are listed. This includes the VA sites, The DoE institutions, HANC affiliates, Canadian institutions, Indian institutions, and Korean based institutions.

After selecting your institution click Continue to Step 2.

Step 2 requests that you enter your first and last name along with your email address.

Please enter your name here as you would like it to appear on your completion report received at the end of the course.  Ensure you use an email address that you can access so you can complete the registration process by verifying the email.

Note: While not required, we do encourage entering a secondary email address. It will assist in the recovery of your account if you forget your username or password and no longer have access to your primary email address.

Step 3 you will chose a username and password for your account.

Please follow the on screen instructions for the expected parameters of each field. Passwords are case sensitive.  During this step you will also select and answer a security question. This question will be used to assist in the recovery of your account if you have forgotten your username or password. Please select a question that is applicable to you and you can comfortably answer for the tech support team.

Step 4 collects demographic information.

All information provided is voluntary. Use the blue information question marks for more information on specific categories.  

Step 5 Professionals seeking credit for CITI Program courses can make their selection for Continuing Education credits during.

Note: This step is where you can also let us know your interest in participating in research surveys at a later date.Step 6 is institutional specific.

Each institution determines the fields listed on this page and what information is required or optional. Some institutions request very specific information such as a employee ID number or campus name. Any questions regarding the fields on this page should be directed to your institution CITI Program administrator.

Step 7 enroll you in CITI Program courses.

These questions are set up based on the institutional specific courses. Please read each question carefully to ensure you are enrolled in the correct course.

After selecting your courses you are given the opportunity to enroll with another institution if needed. If your registration is complete, click on Finalize Registration.

Your learner account registration is complete.

You will now be able to access the Main Menu of your account.

Click on the course name to begin the course. If you need to change your course registration, click on add a Course or Update Learner Group.
