Professional Experience
1998-Present. Principal Investigator of Horticulture, Kentucky
State University, Frankfort, KY.
Research: About 90% of our research effort is focused toward
developing pawpaw [Asimina triloba (L.) Dunal] as a new commercial crop,
with the remaining 10% of our research effort directed toward gooseberry,
currant, grape, and peach variety trials. Our pawpaw research effort includes:
1) conducting a variety trial at KSU in cooperation with other sites across the
nation, 2) examining flowering, fruit set, and ripening, 3) improving clonal and
seedling/rootstock propagation methods, and 4) characterizing the morphological
and molecular variation in the germplasm collection, and 5) developing organic
production methods. I have cooperative research projects with Dr. Robert Geneve
on in vitro clonal propagation of pawpaw and with Dr. Douglas Archbold on pawpaw
postharvest physiology; both are researchers at in the Dept. of Horticulture at
the University of Kentucky (UK).
Extension activities: I have replied to over 1000 emails,
letters, and telephone calls, visited grower sites, organized one to two field
days each year. I conceptualized and chaired the Second International Pawpaw
Conference on September 21-22, 2001, in Frankfort, Kentucky. Over 140 people
attended the conference from 22 states and the proceedings were published in
HortTechnology. I developed a pawpaw information web site (http://www.pawpaw.kysu.edu)
that has had over 100,000 visitors since 1999 and this web site was awarded a
blue ribbon as an outstanding horticultural extension publication by the
Southern Region of ASHS at the 2000 Annual Awards Program. I have a multi-state
SARE project (2003) with grower sites for the development of organic pawpaw
production and I am part of a 2004 SARE planning grant entitled: “The Southern
Region Organic Fruit Production Initiative: Identifying Barriers, Needed
Research, Markets, and Opportunities” where we will gather information from
growers concerning their interest in organic fruit production. To view a video
concerning my extension activities please go to: http://www.pawpaw.kysu.edu/video/video1.html
Teaching and mentoring students: I am an instructor for BIO 410: Special Problems in
Biology, a course at KSU in which advanced biology students who demonstrate
ability and interest in the field conduct an experimental research project and
write a paper concerning their research experience. I serve as a mentor in the
summer KSU Research and Extension Apprentice Program, which allows minority high
school students to gain experience in laboratory techniques through a directed
research project. I also have developed a 3 credit course that will teach for
the first time this spring semester that is entitled BIO 495: Special Topics in
Biology-Understanding Biotechnology. The lecture and laboratory will allow
undergraduate and graduate students to gain “hands on” experience with the
methods of molecular biology used in biotechnology to understand basic
biotechnology issues, such as genetically modified organisms for human
consumption, the human genome project, and cloning that are already impacting
our society. As an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Horticulture
at UK, I have also served as a guest lecturer in the fruit and nut production
class concerning pawpaw and hazelnut production practices. I also co-advised two
graduate students at UK. My students have won state wide and national awards for
presentations concerning their research projects. I also mentor two postdoctoral
researchers at KSU, and serve on the committees of three Aquaculture MS graduate
students at KSU and co-advise one MS graduate student at UK.
1998-Present. Curator, USDA National Clonal Germplasm Repository for Asimina
spp., Kentucky State University, Frankfort, KY.
Maintenance and acquisition of Asimina spp. germplasm collection. As a
satellite site of the repository at Corvallis OR, the KSU orchards contain more than 1700
accessions from 66 distinct geographic regions from 17 different states. This is the
largest pawpaw germplasm collection in the world.
2008-Present. Adjunct Associate Professor of Horticulture, University of Kentucky.
I co-advise graduate students and have cooperative research projects with members of the
Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at the University of Kentucky. I
also guest lecture in fruit production courses and assist the department in other
horticultural research and extension matters.
1998-2008. Adjunct Assistant Professor of Horticulture, University of Kentucky.
1996-1998. Post-doctoral Research Associate, USDA-ARS,
Children's Nutrition Research Center. Examination of the transport and storage of
calcium in green bean pods; increasing bioavalable calcium levels to benefit the
nutritional needs of humans.
1995-1996. Post-doctoral Researcher, Oregon State University.

Eating Appalachian |
Listen, March 8, 2003
We're eating Appalachian this week with food writers Ted and Matt Lee, two
brothers who rented a pickup truck and headed for the back roads of Eastern
Kentucky in search of the elusive pawpaw fruit. Along the way, they discovered
that good food is more about human ingenuity than rich resources. Read more
about their adventure in the article "On the Appalachian Trail" in the March
2002 issue of Food & Wine magazine.
