| Q. |
What is the housing requirement at KSU? |
| A. |
Kentucky State University Residential Housing Policy states the following: (page 43, Kentucky State University Handbook)
All full-time freshmen and sophomores are to live on-campus with the following exceptions:
1. Students who are veterans of at least two years of active military service.
2. Students who commute from the home of parents of legal guardian.
3. Students who are married or are single parents.
4. Students 21 years of age and older.
Therefore, students who do not meet the above requirements must petition for a waiver.
The parent or guardian must give consent for the student to live off campus. |
| Q. |
How do I apply for Housing? |
| A. |
Apply by calling (502) 597-5951, or on-line by checking the question "I plan to live on campus" on your KSU Admission Application. A KSU Housing application and contract will be mailed to you after admission status has been granted. Applications for rooms in the residence halls are received at any time; however, applications are processed only after students have been officially admitted to the University. Requests for room reservations should be addressed to the Office of Residence Life.
For new students, each applicant must submit an application for housing and either $209 (before July 1, 2006) or $300.00 (beginning July 1, 2006) to cover the non-refundable room reservation fee before receiving a room assignment.
For returning students, each applicant must submit an application for housing and $138.00 (before July 1, 2006) or $225.00 (beginning July 1, 2006) to cover the non-refundable room reservation fee before receiving a room assignment.
Note: Figures may change.
Every effort will be made to honor an applicant's preference of residence hall and roommate assignment; however, a particular room is not guaranteed. Assignments are made on a first-come, first-served basis according to the date the deposit is received. Each student will be required to sign a University Residence Hall Contract, which sets forth the conditions for student housing; he/she is then issued a housing permit prior to being admitted to the residence hall.
One-half of the annual room fees must be paid during each of the two semesters during the regular academic year. Summer session room fees are due at the beginning of the term. All fees and expenses are payable in accordance with the fee-payment schedule in the Finance and Collections or Bursar's area.

| Q. |
Am I required to have a meal plan? |
| A. |
All students living in University-owned or -operated housing facilities are required to purchase University cafeteria meal cards. Students experiencing special health and/or work schedule problems may be exempted from this requirement through written approval from the Office of Student Affairs.
All resident students pay a flat rate of $1,520 per semester for meal plans, or board. Students may choose between three different plans to accomodate their eating habits:
10 meals per week with $300 flex dollars
15 meals per week with $200 flex dollars
19 meals per week with $125 flex dollars
Note: Both meals and flex dollars can be used in the Underwood Cafeteria, but only flex dollars can be used in the Food Court area.
For more information, please contact Dining Services at (502)597-6398.
Meal Plan Exemptions
Exemptions from the University's board plan shall be requested only by students who have been assessed charges for room and board. MEAL PLAN EXEMPTIONS SHALL BE GRANTED ONLY FOR EMPLOYMENT OR MEDICAL REASONS. Any student requesting a meal plan exemption must bring to the Office of Student Affairs the following:
1. A written statement from his or her employer indicating the proposed period of employment and the designated work schedule. Meal plan exemptions for reasons of employment shall be granted only to students who because of work schedules will miss at least 50 percent of the 19 meals served in the Cafeteria each week. Requests for meal plan exemptions for employment reasons MUST be submitted to the Office of Student Affairs on or before the last day of late registration each semester. Only exemptions for medical reasons will be honored after that time.
2. A written, signed statement from a licensed physician indicating the medical reason(s) for the requested exemption. A proposed diet or diet plan MUST also be included for proper consideration of the request. Meal plan exemptions for medical reasons shall be granted only if the proposed diet plan cannot be accommodated by the University's Food Service.
Any student found guilty of falsifying documents or entering an unauthorized agreement to obtain a meal plan exemption shall be required to make restitution to the University. |
| Q. |
May I request a hall and/or roommate? |
| A. |
Every effort will be made to honor an applicant's preference of hall and roommate assignment. However, a particular room and/or roommate is not guaranteed. Assignments are made on a first-come, first serve basis upon checking into Residence Hall. To ensure a preferred roommate, housing fees should be submitted together. Please know that your room reservation is based on a first paid basis. |
| Q. |
Is there a cost difference between private, double, and suite rooms? |
| A. |
The majority of the rooms on campus are double rooms, meaning that two students occupy the room. Single rooms can be requested and are assigned if space is available. Please know that your room reservation is based on a first paid basis. Triples are located in Kentucky Hall that hold 3 people. Suites located in Kentucky and Chandler hall hold four people. There must be four people to request the suite. Suites located in McCullin Hall are two rooms that share a common bath between them. There is an additional cost for all suites and singles on campus. |
| Q. |
How do I become a resident assistant? |
| A. |
Fill out the resident assistant application. Have more than 30 hours. Note: Filling out the application and having more than 30 hours will not guarantee that you will be offered the position. |
| Q. |
Do you have Family Housing? |
| A. |
No, not at this time. |
| Q. |
When will I receive my room assignment? |
| A. |
New student assignments are made after returning students have completed a renewal process by their appropriate deadline. Assignments are based on the date the reservation/damage deposit and application are received. New students entering for the fall semester should receive their assignment letter from June to August. New students entering for the spring semester should receive their assignment letter prior to the start of the spring semester. Assignment letters contain hall and room assignment.
Assignment letters are sent by mail. Assignments are based on available space. We make every attempt to accommodate the preferences listed on the application. We cannot accommodate all requests. Many students do receive their hall and roommate preference if they and their roommate have early processing dates. |
| Q. |
What if my hall or roommate is different that I requested? |
| A. |
College provides an opportunity to meet new friends and to spend time getting to know people from many different backgrounds. Limited space is available, so we cannot always guarantee that we can honor a roommate or change request. Due to the volume of students we are attempting to accommodate, changes can not be made until after room assignments have been mailed. After the school year begins, room and/or roommate changes may be made during the beginning of the semester. A student may contact his/her Head Resident for assistance and information. |
| Q. |
When can I check in for any semester? |
| A. |
Check in at each residence hall begins on the date specified on the University calendar and ends at 5 p.m. the day before classes begin.
Don't be a No Show. Failure to check in will result in cancellation of the student's assignment and forfeiture of the room reservation fee. Arrangements for late arrival check in must be made in advance through Residence Life Office during office hours or by contacting the Head Resident at the assigned residence hall front desk after opening and prior to the classes beginning. |
| Q. |
Can I get my money back if I cancel my housing? |
| A. |
Yes, provided you are eligible and follow the proper procedure: In order to cancel your housing and be eligible to receive a refund of the reservation fee, a request in writing must be submitted to the Residence Life office. This request must be postmarked by the specified deadline for each semester to be eligible. The cancellation deadline dates are: August 1 for fall semester, December 15 for spring semester, and June 2 for summer semester. No refund shall be made for applications or cancellations submitted after these deadlines. |
| Q. |
Where may I live during breaks if I can't go home? |
| A. |
All the residence halls are closed during extended breaks (Winter, Spring Break, etc), but if a student needs housing during any of these breaks, they may apply for guest housing with the Residence Life Office. There is a daily charge to help defray the costs of staffing and utilities. |
| Q. |
Where do I receive my mail? |
| A. |
Each residence hall has mailboxes near or in the main lobby. A mailbox number (different from the room number) will be assigned at check in.
