Welcome!
We would like to introduce you to the Kentucky State University Center for Family Nutrition and Wellness Education (CFNWE). The CFNWE is supported by the Kentucky State University Land Grant Program through a United States Department of Agriculture Capacity Building Grant. The goal of the CFNWE is to increase practice of developing nutritious diets and encourage physical fitness in the home in order to combat obesity and chronic illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease.
An Epidemic
As the epidemic of obesity -- which for many years was most prominent in adult populations -- transcends to our playgrounds, our schools, and even our daycare facilities, our health professionals have begun taking significant steps in battling this problem. According to the Kentucky Department of Public Health, Kentucky has the 5th highest prevalence of overweight/obese adults in the United States. Even more frightening, over a third of our Kentucky's children are either overweight or "at risk for becoming overweight".
To The Future
It is our desire that students learn to develop healthy lifestyles rather than merely gaining healthy experiences. By providing the cornerstone of nutrition and physical fitness education within the school, it is possible to ensure that students will gain that healthy experience. By following that cornerstone with meaningful building blocks at home, we will hopefully see strong healthy lifestyles in the future.
We hope that you will join us in our efforts to make Central Kentucky a model for nutrition and physical fitness education for the rest of the state and country. This is a huge challenge, but with passionate educators and families, ready and equipped to act, it is a challenge that we can meet!
