Research Focus
A multitude of health problems in later life are of nutritional origin and this is increasing the momentum to identify eating habits and behavior of adolescents. Changes in eating habits begin during early adolescence, when nutritional needs are at its highest and when habits such as dieting, eating disorders, snacking and eating fast foods become entrenched. Hence it is important to ascertain the food choices and eating habits of this age group and target nutrition education to this data.
Ongoing Research Project: ASSESSMENT OF EATING HABITS AND FOOD CHOICES OF ADOLESCENTS AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NUTRITION INTERVENTION PROGRAM
This project will use data from focus groups conducted with 6th graders and their parents, and the school lunch program to assess the food choices and eating habits. This data will then be used to develop a specific online nutrition education program for adolescents and their parents; the effectiveness of the online program will also be determined. Middle schools in Kentucky will be encouraged to administer the online nutrition education program to adolescents as an extracurricular activity.
