English as a Second Language Program offered at KSU
Kentucky State University has a program of residential study for International students, focusing on development of skills in English, exposure to American university academic content, and an experience of American culture.
The program is being coordinated by Dr. Kwang H. Suh, Academic Advisor and Professor in the Whithey Young College of Leadership Studies. His office is located in Hathaway Hall 322, and he can be contacted by phone at 502-597-6990 or 502-597-6751. You may also contact Dr. Suh by e-mail at k.suh@kysu.edu.
All students admitted to this program must be recommended by Dr. Suh after review of each student applicant. Applications from Taiwanese, Chinese, Japanese and Korean students are welcome.
We are currently working to make it possible for students to opt for participating in only the non- credit ESL group study until they have developed English skills sufficient for academic credit course work (in such case the tuition charge for the ESL group study will be $2,499 per term. However, all fees are subject to change without notice).
For those opting to be admitted into the academic credit program we recommend the following curriculum:
Fall Term (15-16 weeks)
ENG 096 - Fundamentals of Writing for Foreign Students (3 Credit Hours)
ENG 103 - College Reading (3 Credit Hours)
6 Credit Hours of Liberal Studies or Elective Course Work (not requiring a pre-requisite)
Informal group study with English speakers will be arranged. (10-20 hours per week of English conversation and lab work, supervised by an ESL instructor. No credit hours.)
Spring Term (15-16 weeks)
When the student enrolls for the Spring Term, the TOEFL Exam Post-Test will be given at the end of the term. The Spring Term will consist of ENG 101 - English Composition I (or a developmental English course as determined by diagnostic placement), and 9 Credit Hours of Liberal Studies or Elective course work.
Summer Term (8-9 weeks)
TOEFL Exam (Pre-Test). The TOEFL Exam will be waived for purposes of admission to this special ESL program; the pre-test is used only for the purpose of measuring progress in the study of English.
ENG 095 - Fundamentals of English for Foreign Students (3 Credit Hours)
ENG 088 - Reading (3 Credit Hours)
Informal group study with English speakers will be arranged. (20 hours per week of English conversation and lab work, supervised by an ESL instructor. No credit hours.)
(Please note that students may continue academic study at Kentucky State University as conditionally admitted students even if the TOEFL post-test result is under 525.)
