Athletics
Kentucky State is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). At present, all sports are classified in Division II. KSU is currently affiliated with the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and competes for conference championships in all sports.

National Championships
Kentucky State has had ten National Championship teams in its athletic history. The Kentucky State Men's Basketball team, which won three straight NAIA Championships in 1970-72, leads the way with three titles. The 1971 Track team won its NCAA College Division II Championship, the 1964 Cross Country team won the NCAA College Division II Championship, and the 1934, 1935, and 1937 Football teams were National Champion. The 1981 Women's Basketball team won the NAIA National Championship. The 1998 and 2000 Golf teams won the National Minority Intercollegiate Golf Championship.
Bowl Appearances
Kentucky State's appearance in the Pioneer Bowl in December of 1997 was the seventh bowl contest in which the University has participated. KSU defeated Livingstone, 30-26. The team first played in the Orange Blossom Classic in 1935 when it beat Florida A&M 19-10. In 1938 A&M topped the Breds 9-7. In 1971, A&M beat the Breds 27-9 and 40-13 in 1975. Other bowl appearances came in 1943 when the 'Breds beat Prairie View 19-3 in the Prairie View Bowl which was discontinued in 1962, and in 1948 which Kentucky State beat North Carolina A&T in the Vulcan Bowl.
