RE:                  2008 Summer Transportation Institute

Kentucky State University will host the 2008 Summer Transportation Institute for secondary school students from Sunday, June 29 thru Saturday, July 26, 2008.  The purpose of the Institute is to create awareness and stimulate interest in students to take full advantage of the opportunities that exist in the transportation industry. 

The Summer Transportation Institute is sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), and is an extremely intense and structured four-week residential learning opportunity for youth in the secondary school systems of Kentucky.

The curriculum will expose students to new frontiers and adventures such as highway design, transportation of people and cargo, intermodalism, laws, regulations, safety, and career opportunities.   In addition, students will participate in ACT preparation courses, academic enhancement activities, field trips, and group projects.

Approximately fifteen (15) rising ninth and tenth grade students will receive full scholarships to participate in this four-week residential summer program.   Scholarships include the following:

  • Tuition   /Lodging/Meals            
  • Campus Facility Usage                                    
  • Equipment & Supplies 
  • Travel (local & regional field trips)
  • Lab & Speakers’ Fees
  • Workshops and Handouts

Guidance counselors should identify at least two students for the Summer Transportation Institute and assist them with completing the application form prior to the May 2nd deadline.

Notification of scholarship award will be made to selected students by the Summer Transportation Institute staff at Kentucky State University.  The following criteria will be used in the selection of scholarship recipients:

Students MUST:

  • be entering the 9th or 10th grade for the 2008-2009 school year
  • have completed or be qualified to enroll in Pre-Algebra for the ’08-’09 school year
  • have average to above average academic achievement
  • have an expressed interest in Engineering, Science, Transportation, or Technology related career
  • provide at least two (2) letters of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, pastor, or someone other than a relative
  • provide a recent transcript
  • provide a 300-350 word essay addressing questions A and B as follows:

          A. What are your career goals?

          B. How does transportation affect your everyday life?

Please consult with your science, mathematics, and technology education teachers for the names of potential students who may qualify for the Summer Transportation Institute.
