Amanda Sokan, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor of Gerontology in the College of Professional Studies at Kentucky State University, Frankfort. Her research interests include elder rights/justice and marginalized populations, elder mistreatment and physician training and behavior, and aging and healthcare negotiation. She holds degrees in political science, law, health administration and gerontology, and also completed an administrative fellowship with a focus on workforce planning at UK Healthcare. Amanda is a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, as well as Sigma Phi Omega (SPO), the Gerontology academic and professional honors society. Her professional affiliations include the Gerontological Society of America (GSA), American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), and Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE) where she serves as a member of the SPO Executive Board. In addition Amanda is a member of the British Society of Gerontology (BSG), and board member of Kentucky Association of Gerontology (KAG). She is founder of Profoundly Gero!, a consultative/training group for matters relating to aging and older adults. She has extensive experience facilitating workshops, and delivering presentations at seminars and professional conferences. Locally, Sokan is a member of the Bluegrass Aging Consortium, past chair of the Elder Abuse Prevention Council, and board member of Faith-in Action, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting older adults in Fayette and Scott Counties.
