Objectives and Desired Outcomes

The overall objectives of the School of Business are categorized into three areas: teaching, intellectual contribution, and service. Specific objectives in each area are as follows: Teaching:
  • Focus on enhancing students' communication and problem solving skills and encouraging them to think both critically and creatively.
  • Integrate technology into curriculum development and instruction delivery
  • Encourage teamwork and the appreciation of diversity in group settings.
  • Offer curriculum that reflects the latest developments in business.
  • Provide students with the ability to achieve the highest level of success in their professional careers.
Intellectual Contribution:
  • Commit to the intellectual development of both students and faculty.
  • Encourage faculty to engage in research activities.
Service:
  • Serve the School of Business; the University; the business community; academic and other professional organizations; and the local, state, national, and international communities.

OBJECTIVES OF THE COMMON PROFESSIONAL COMPONENT AND EACH SPECIALIZATION AREA

Common Professional Component

Students completing the common professional component will possess the broad skills necessary to effectively pursue their chosen specialization. The component provides a solid background in an organization's environment and operations and provides the analytical tools needed for problem solving and decision-making.

Students should be able to:
  • Understand the environment and operations of an organization
  • Be able to apply business-related analytical tools
  • Be able to apply professional and personal self-management skills

Specialization Area Goals

Accounting

Graduates in the accounting specialization area will possess the knowledge and skills necessary for a professional accounting position in public accounting, industry and government in an ever-changing, globally competitive business environment. This program also provides a solid background for students who may want to pursue graduate work in accounting or related areas.

Graduates should be able to:

  • Understand and apply principles and practices in the major functional areas of accounting
  • Demonstrate analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, communication and information technology skills

General Business

Graduates in the general business program will possess the knowledge and skills necessary to become small business owners, entrepreneurs and consultants in an ever-changing, globally competitive business environment. Graduates from the program should be able to pursue graduate work in business or related areas.

Graduates should be able to:

  • Understand the industry, national, and global environments in which a business operates
  • Analyze a wide variety of business situations and make appropriate decisions
  • Gather information from a variety of sources, integrate the information, and communicate the results to appropriate other people and groups
  • Understand the quantitative, scientific, social, technological and cultural influences affecting business

    Management

    Graduates in the management specialization area will possess knowledge and skills necessary to fill professional management positions in corporate, government, or small business in an ever-changing, globally competitive business environment. This program also provides a solid background for students who may want to pursue graduate work in management or related areas.

    Graduates should be able to:
    • Work effectively with others and lead others in a common mission
    • Demonstrate analytical, problem solving, decision-making, communication, quantitative, and information technology skills

    Marketing

    Graduates in the marketing specialization will possess the communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills required for filling professional marketing positions in corporate, government, or small business organizations in an ever-changing, and globally competitive business environment. This program also provides a solid background for students who may want to pursue graduate work in business or related areas.

    Graduates should be able to:
    • Understand basic marketing principles and apply them effectively in their professional lives
    • Design and manage programs that create and deliver the organization's products and services to its various markets
    • Demonstrate analytical, problem solving, decision-making, communication, quantitative, and information technology skills

LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THE COMMON PROFESSIONAL COMPONENT AND EACH SPECIALIZATION AREA

Learning outcomes are divided into outcomes for the liberal studies core, the common business core, and specialization areas. The outcomes are derived from the objectives listed above in section IV and provide a link to the assessment measures.

University Liberal Studies

  1. To communicate accurately and effectively in writing and speech.
  2. To think critically and analytically.
  3. To read with comprehension at a level appropriate for college students.
  4. To use the methods of mathematical and scientific inquiry.
  5. To access, critically evaluate, and effectively utilize library and information resources in print and electronic format.
  6. To recognize and value both the global diversity of cultures, by study of Western and non-western cultures and by study of foreign language, and the multicultural nature of American society.
  7. To make informed and ethical decisions.
  8. To understand past and contemporary social, cultural, and political issues from disciplinary perspectives.
  9. To integrate knowledge from a variety of disciplines, cultures, and historical contexts from the ancient to the modern world.
  10. To appreciate the aesthetic values embodied in human creative expression.
  11. To develop life skills that will help them become self-sufficient individuals and productive members of society.

  4. To be able to apply analytical tools to business problem solving and decision-making. (BUA 101-Computer Applications; BUA 204-Bus Communications; ECO 311/312-Statistics; ECO 321-Quantitative Methods; MAT 125-Pre-calculus)
  5. To be able to apply professional self-management skills for the workplace including career planning and behavior (dress, attendance, teamwork, follow directions).

    Specialization Areas

    Accounting Specialization
    1. To continue development of General Education and Common Professional Component learning outcomes
    2. To understand the major functional areas of accounting: financial accounting (ACC 301-Intermediate Accounting I and ACC 302- Intermediate Accounting II) - cost accounting (ACC 308-Cost Accounting I) - accounting systems (ACC 324-Accounting Information Systems) -taxation (ACC 462-Federal Income Taxation) - auditing (ACC 403-Auditing)
    3. To be able to apply accounting principles and practices, solve accounting-related problems, and make business decisions.
    4. To understand and be able to take advantage of career opportunities in accounting.
    General Business Specialization
    1. To continue development of General Education and common professional component learning outcomes.
    2. To deepen understanding of the business functions of managerial accounting and operations management.
    3. To understand certain other business topics of particular interest to individual students (professional electives).
    4. To understand and be able to take advantage of career opportunities in business.
    Management Specialization
    1. To continue development of General Education and Common Professional Component Learning Outcomes.
    2. To understand the most common organizational functions. (ACC 300-Managerial Accounting; MGT 433-Human Resources; MGT 452-Transportation and Logistics; MGT 455-Production Management.)
    3. To be able to apply the management functions of planning, organizing, staffing, motivating and controlling within the organization's functions and to the organization as a whole.
    4. To understand and be able to take advantage of career opportunities in management.
    Marketing Specialization
    1. To continue development of the General Education and Common Professional Component Learning Outcomes.
    2. To gain a detailed understanding of the major subfields of marketing: (MKT 410-Marketing Communications; MKT 420-Marketing Management; MKT 430-Marketing Research; MKT 440-Consumer Behavior)
    3. To be able to apply marketing principles and knowledge to solve marketing problems and make business decisions.
