Edwin Chavous

 

Edwin Chavous, has 18 years of experience as the Area Agent in Small Farms with the 2501 Program at Kentucky State University. He serves Anderson, Boyle, Franklin, Garrard, Jessamine, Lincoln, Mercer, Woodford, Owen and Scott counties. In 2010, his area expanded to include the “truck gardens” of the refugees served by the Catholic Charities of Louisville, Kentucky.

Experience: KSU Area Agent with the 2501 Program responsible for delivering programs to socially disadvantaged and small farmers for 18 years. In addition to one-on-one education, he developed and facilitates annual Risk Management outreach meetings for socially disadvantaged farmers at the Boneyville Baptist Church, 2nd Christian Church and has assisted in over 150 applications for USDA and state programs including NRCS programs, RD housing loans and grants, FSA loans, and Federal Crop Insurance applications.

Edwin has previous experience as Agricultural Management Specialist with USDA Farmers Home Administration, responsible for servicing housing and farm applications. Edwin is currently a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves, where he is responsible for evaluating, counseling, mentoring and facilitating officers attending ILE (an intensive staff officer course).

Responsibilities: Provide one-on-one education and outreach program delivery to socially disadvantaged farmers; coordinate farmers with USDA agencies including assisting them in filing applications and the entire application process; preparing reports; assisting with Third Thursday Workshops; planning and conducting annual educational Risk Management outreach meetings at the Boneyville Baptist Church (Lincoln County) and in Anderson County; conducting educational farm demonstrations and workshops; newsletters.
